First: A brief history of the African Nations Cup

1- The idea: for the African Nations Cup

But how did the idea begin? The idea of establishing an African Football Championship for men was born on June 8, 1956, after a meeting in the Avenida hotel in Portugal between the Egyptians Abdel Aziz Salem and Mohamed Latif and the Sudanese Abdel Halim Shaddad, Badawi Mohamed, and Abdel Halim Mohamed.

2- The start: for the African Nations Cup

The first edition of the tournament was held in Sudan in 1957, and it was to be held with the participation of four countries, namely Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, and South Africa, but South Africa was excluded due to the apartheid policy at the time. Egypt won it to be the first country to win the championship title.

The second tournament was hosted by Egypt in 1959, with the participation of the same three teams, and Egypt won and retained the title.

3- The most successful countries in the African Cup of Nations

Egypt is the country with the most achievement of the African Nations Cup for men's football. She got it 7 times in the years (1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, 2010). She retained the championship trophy after winning three consecutive titles.

In the years 2006, 2008, and 2020, and with this, Egypt will be the country that achieves the most championship, as it is the only country in the African continent to achieve the title three times in a row.

Cameroon won the championship five times in the years (1984. 19 .).

Ghana has won the tournament four times in the years (1963, 1965, 1978, 1982).

4- The current version of the African Cup of Nations
